Quick version: start with the full-year entitlement, then pro-rate it for the part of the leave year worked. Check whether bank holidays are included, added on top or handled separately by the employer.
The full-year figure comes first
For many regular workers, the usual starting point is weekly working days multiplied by 5.6. Someone working 5 days a week often sees this described as 28 days. Someone working 3 days a week would usually start from 16.8 days before any employer extras are considered.
That does not mean every workplace shows entitlement in exactly the same format. Some use days, some use hours, and some separate contractual leave from bank holidays.
Starters and leavers need a part-year calculation
If someone starts halfway through the leave year, they normally only need the portion of annual leave that relates to the part of the year they will work. The same idea applies when someone leaves before the year ends.
This is where small wording differences matter. "25 days plus bank holidays" is not the same as "33 days including bank holidays". The number can look similar, but the booking rules may be different.

Bank holidays
Bank holidays can be included in statutory annual leave. They do not automatically have to be extra paid days.
Part-time patterns
A worker who does not work Mondays may be affected differently by Monday bank holidays than someone who does.
Rounding
Employers may round entitlement according to policy, but rounding should not leave someone below the legal minimum.
Irregular hours need extra care
When hours vary, entitlement is often easier to understand in hours rather than days. This avoids pretending that every "day off" has the same value when shifts are different lengths.
For irregular-hours and part-year workers, GOV.UK explains that leave can build up based on hours already worked. In real life, that means the right answer may depend on the leave year, the pay period and the worker type.
