How to use the VAT calculator

Use the VAT calculator when you need to add VAT to a net amount, remove VAT from a gross amount, find the VAT-only value, or check a simple invoice line. The result card separates the net amount, VAT amount, gross amount and rate so the working is easier to check than a single total.

For adding VAT, the calculator multiplies the net amount by the VAT rate to find the VAT amount, then adds that VAT to the net price. For removing VAT, it divides the gross amount by the VAT multiplier. At 20%, the multiplier is 1.2, so a gross price of GBP 120 divided by 1.2 gives a net price of GBP 100.

VAT examples

If a product costs GBP 100 before VAT and the rate is 20%, the VAT is GBP 20 and the total including VAT is GBP 120. If a receipt shows GBP 120 including VAT at 20%, the calculator can work backwards to show GBP 100 net and GBP 20 VAT.

The custom rate option is useful when checking a non-standard rate, but VAT treatment depends on the goods or services, the customer, the country and the conditions of supply. For UK VAT decisions, check current HMRC guidance or speak to a suitable adviser.

Common VAT questions

Is zero-rated the same as exempt? No. A zero-rated supply has VAT charged at 0%, while exempt supplies sit outside VAT in a different way. The business treatment can differ.

Can this calculate a full VAT return? No. This is for simple price and invoice-line checks, not complete VAT accounting.

Why do penny differences happen? Rounding each line separately can differ from rounding a subtotal. The decimal-place option lets you choose how the result is displayed.
