How air fryer conversions work

Air fryers circulate hot air quickly around food, so they often use a slightly lower temperature and shorter time than a conventional oven. Avoid crowding the basket and shake or turn food where its instructions suggest it.

Using an air fryer conversion safely

This calculation is a starting point rather than a cooking guarantee. Small drawers, dual baskets, a full basket and food straight from the fridge can all change the cooking time. Turn or shake food where needed so it cooks evenly.

Use the appliance manual and food packaging as the final word. Check that food is thoroughly cooked before serving, particularly meat, poultry and reheated leftovers.

Air fryer conversion questions

Should I preheat an air fryer?

Follow the appliance manual. Some models benefit from a short preheat, while others are designed to start cold. The calculation does not add preheat time.

Why does the same food cook differently?

Air flow is affected by the model, basket size, how full it is and the shape of the food. Cook in a single layer where possible and use the earliest check time shown.

Getting a better air fryer result

Leave enough space for air to circulate. A crowded basket may need longer than the estimate, while a small amount of food can brown early. Check the food at the first-check time and continue in short bursts if needed. Recipes with wet batter, a lot of sauce or loose toppings are not always suited to an air fryer basket. Use an oven-safe dish only when your appliance manual permits it and leaves room for air flow. The conversion is most useful for oven chips, roasted vegetables, breaded foods and similar dry-roasted items.

A simple kitchen rule

Use the first-check time, not just the final estimate. If the food needs longer, add a few minutes at a time; if it is browning too quickly, lower the temperature. Your own basket and usual portion size will soon give you a better rule than any universal conversion.
