Internet & File Tools

Connection and file calculators for the questions that sit next to household bills, not instead of them: how long a download takes, whether a disk is large enough, and how to convert a unit or an audio file without installing extra software.

Download Speed Calculator

Estimate how long a file takes to download from the size and the connection speed you enter.

Why these tools sit together

Broadband usage is a household-bill question, so it stays with energy and subscriptions on the homepage. Download time, disk space and file conversion are neighbouring jobs, but they are not pay tools. This hub collects them so they remain useful without crowding the UK money calculators.

Mbps and MB/s are easy to mix up. If a result looks ten times too fast or too slow, read the Mbps vs MB/s guide before changing the connection speed.

How to choose the right file tool

Use the download calculator when you know the file size and the download speed. Use the upload calculator for the slower direction, which is usually the limit for backups and video sends. Use the storage calculator when the question is disk capacity rather than time.

Use the unit converter for mixed metric, imperial or data units. Use the audio converter when you only need a different audio format and do not want to upload the file to a third-party service. For monthly broadband caps, open the broadband usage calculator from Household bills instead.

What these tools do not do

They do not speed-test your line, talk to your internet provider, or measure real packet loss. Entered speeds are assumptions. Overhead, Wi-Fi contention and time-of-day congestion can make transfers slower than the estimate.

The audio converter runs locally in supporting browsers. It does not replace a desktop editor for batch work, loudness matching or professional codecs.
