Decimal hours for timesheets and planning
Use this for timesheets, pay estimates, invoices, shift planning and any task where minutes need to become a decimal hour value.
This calculator converts a time such as 7 hours 30 minutes into decimal hours, such as 7.50 hours. It can also convert the other way, turning a decimal value such as 7.75 hours into 7 hours 45 minutes.
Decimal hours are useful when a timesheet, payroll estimate, invoice or hourly rate calculator expects hours as a decimal number. The conversion uses 60 minutes in one hour, so each minute is one sixtieth of an hour.
To convert hours and minutes to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add the answer to the whole hours. For example, 45 minutes divided by 60 is 0.75, so 8 hours 45 minutes is 8.75 hours.
To convert decimal hours back to hours and minutes, keep the whole number as the hours, multiply the decimal part by 60, and round to the nearest minute. For example, 6.25 hours is 6 hours plus 0.25 of an hour, and 0.25 x 60 is 15 minutes.
The minutes box is limited to 0 to 59 because 60 minutes becomes the next whole hour. Decimal-to-time results round to the nearest whole minute, so very long decimal values may not convert back exactly if many decimal places are omitted.
