How this shift pay estimate works

The calculator starts with your shift length, removes any unpaid break, then multiplies the paid time by your hourly rate. If you receive an enhanced rate, such as a night or weekend uplift, it adds that percentage to the base shift pay. It then multiplies one shift by the number of shifts entered for a weekly figure.

The monthly and yearly figures assume the same week repeats for 52 weeks. They are useful for comparing job patterns or checking a rota, but they are not a payslip prediction. Different weeks, unpaid leave, annual leave, overtime, sickness, payroll cut-off dates and employer rules can all change the actual amount.

Paid time matters

A 30-minute unpaid break reduces the paid time in an eight-hour shift to 7.5 hours.

Use the actual uplift

Enter the percentage in your contract or rota. A 25% uplift means 25, not 1.25.

Gross, not take-home

The result is before Income Tax, National Insurance, pension and any other deductions.

Common shift pay checks

Check whether breaks are paid, whether the advertised rate includes holiday pay, and whether enhancements apply to the whole shift or only certain hours. Some employers use a flat shift allowance instead of a percentage uplift. Others pay overtime after a weekly threshold, or use a different Sunday or bank-holiday rate.

Using yearly projections carefully

A projection based on 52 identical weeks is less useful for term-time work, seasonal work, temporary rotas or a job with unpaid shutdowns. Where holiday pay is rolled up, included in the rate or paid separately, read the offer and payslip wording before comparing roles. If the rota changes regularly, run separate examples rather than relying on one average shift.
