How the upload time estimate works

The calculator converts the file size into bits, converts your upload speed into bits per second, applies the real-world adjustment, then divides file size by usable speed.

Internet plans often advertise download speed more loudly than upload speed. For uploads, use the upload figure from a speed test or router app. There are 8 bits in 1 byte, so a 20 Mbps upload speed is about 2.5 MB per second before real-world slowdowns.

Mbps and MB/s are different

20 Mbps is about 2.5 MB/s before Wi-Fi, service limits and protocol overheads.

Real uploads can vary

Cloud services, video platforms, VPNs, Wi-Fi signal, other devices and background sync can change the actual time.

Decimal and binary sizes

GB and MB use decimal units here. GiB and MiB use binary units, which some operating systems and tools use.

Example upload time checks

A 5 GB video on a 20 Mbps upload connection is not a 25 second upload. Because upload speed is usually measured in megabits and file size is usually shown in gigabytes, the calculator converts both to the same base before estimating the time. Before overheads, 20 Mbps is about 2.5 MB per second.

The animated preview is deliberately illustrative. It turns the estimate into a visible progress example, stops at the entered file size and does not transfer, inspect or store any real files. Use it to understand the scale of the estimate, then expect real uploads to move unevenly.

YouTube and video uploads

Uploading the file is only one step. Video sites may also process, check and transcode the video after the upload reaches 100%.

Cloud backups

Backup apps may scan files, skip duplicates, retry failed chunks or pause when a laptop is on battery, so the full backup can take longer than raw transfer time.

Use the right speed

Use upload speed, not download speed. Many home broadband plans have a much slower upload rate than the headline download rate.

Why the progress preview may not match a real upload

Real uploads do not usually move in a perfect line. They can start slowly while the connection is negotiated, pause while a cloud app checks a file, retry small chunks, or slow down when another device starts syncing. The preview intentionally smooths the estimate so you can see the expected scale without pretending to measure your connection.

If the real upload is much slower, try comparing a wired connection with Wi-Fi, pausing other sync apps, checking VPN settings and testing a smaller file first.
