Plan the upload before the deadline

Use the upload figure from your speed test, not the larger download figure advertised for the connection. Sending a 5 GB video at 20 Mbps requires 5,000 × 8 ÷ 20 = 2,000 seconds: 33 minutes 20 seconds before slowdowns.

At 80% usable speed, the effective rate is 16 Mbps and the estimate becomes 2,500 seconds, or 41 minutes 40 seconds. File sizes use the unit you select; 5 GiB is not the same amount of data as 5 GB.

Leave time after the progress bar reaches 100%

A video platform may still need to transcode the file, generate previews or run checks. A client portal may need to validate an archive before it is available to the recipient. Those steps are outside this transfer estimate.

First backup or daily backup?

An initial backup may send the entire selected folder. Later backups often send only changed data. Enter the amount the app says it needs to upload, not the full disk capacity. A folder containing many small files may take longer than one large file because of per-file checks.

When several devices upload together

A cloud backup, video call and photo sync can share the same upstream capacity. Adjust usable speed to reflect a measured rate while those activities are running; this tool cannot know how your router or service divides bandwidth.

For a deadline, try the calculation at your normal measured speed and a lower observed speed. Keep the original file until the destination confirms receipt. The animated preview sends nothing and cannot verify that a cloud backup is complete.
