The calculator converts the file size into bits, converts your internet speed into bits per second, applies the real-world adjustment, then divides file size by usable speed.
Internet plans are usually advertised in megabits per second, written as Mbps. File sizes are usually shown in megabytes or gigabytes. There are 8 bits in 1 byte, so a 100 Mbps connection does not mean 100 MB downloads every second.

A 5 GB file on a 100 Mbps connection is not a 50 second download. Because internet speed is usually advertised in megabits and file size is usually shown in gigabytes, the calculator converts both to the same base before estimating the time. Before overheads, 100 Mbps is about 12.5 MB per second.
The animated preview is deliberately illustrative. It turns the estimate into a visible progress example, stops at the entered file size and does not transfer or inspect any real files. Use it to understand the scale of the estimate, then expect real downloads to move unevenly.
Wi-Fi signal, router load, VPNs, server limits, disk speed, background updates and other devices can reduce the usable rate.
Game launchers may download compressed data, unpack files and verify updates, so the total install time can be longer than network transfer alone.
MB/s is megabytes per second. Mbps is megabits per second. Mixing them is the most common reason estimates look wrong.
Real downloads do not usually move in a perfect line. They can start slowly while the connection is negotiated, burst faster while cached data arrives, pause while a game launcher verifies files, or slow down near the end while an archive is unpacked. The preview intentionally smooths the estimate so you can see the expected scale without pretending to measure your connection.
If the real download is much slower, try comparing a wired connection with Wi-Fi, pausing other downloads, checking VPN settings and testing against a different server.
